Help: Getting Started with Emulation (MAME)

What is needed to get started with emulation and playing those classic arcade games you love? Well, not much really.

The basics:

1. Download and Install the emulator MAME32 or MAMEPLUS
2. Download roms (look in the Emulators and Roms section on this site)
3. Put roms in rom directory of MAME32 (do not unzip!)
4. Start MAME32
5. Let MAME32 search for new games (F5)
6. Look at the available games and start the game
7. Use '5' to insert coins and '1' to start the game for player 1
8. Controls: 'Ctrl', 'Space' action buttons and arrow keys

Which games should i play?

- Fighting: Double Dragon, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, vendetta, battle toads, ninja turtles, the Punisher, Alien vs Predator

- Vs Fighting: KOF (King of Fighters), Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom

- Shooting: Darius, Gradius, Nemesis, 1942, R-Type, Scramble, Aero Fighters

- Sidescrolling/platform: Metal Slug, knights of the round, Golden Axe, Green Beret, Commando, ghosts 'n goblins
- Classics: pac man, galaga, mario bros, dig dug, donkey kong, Arkanoid, Bombjack, Bubble Bobble

- SEGA: Out Run, Outrunners, After Burnerm II, Powerdrift, Shinobi
